Portland Friends of the Dhamma

Other Lineages

Though Portland Friends of the Dhamma arises from the Theravada, Thai-Forest meditation lineage of Ajahn Chah, there are a few groups using the center that come from other lineages.

Portland Community of Mindful Living practices in the Thich Nhat Hanh tradition. Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, a poet, a scholar, and a peace activist. His life long efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. [more] He founded the Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon and the School for Youths of Social Services in Vietnam. When not traveling the world to teach “The Art of Mindful Living”, he teaches, writes, and gardens in Plum Village, France, a Buddhist monastery for monks and nuns and a mindfulness practice center for lay people.

PCML meets Thursday evenings 7:00 – 9:00 PM. Contact PCML with questions.    [less]

Trillium Sangha is an open, peer-led community of lay vipassana (insight meditation) practitioners. Our guiding teachers are both lay westerners and monastics trained in the Thai and Burmese Theravada traditions. Our intention is to support each other’s practice through formal meditation, the practice of generosity, and the strengthening of mindfulness in everyday life. [more]

We meet on Sunday nights 6:30 – 8:30 PM for brief chanting (in Pali and English, with written copies provided), followed by a 45 minute sit, 20 minutes of walking, and another 30 minute sit. Once a month, the first sit is shorter, and we listen to a recorded dharma talk instead of sitting a second time. No instruction is offered.

One Sunday each month (calendar), Trillium Sangha holds one of its Days of Mindfulness, a non-residential silent vipassana retreat. Give yourself the gift of an extended period of practice—it’s easy and accessible, so take advantage of this opportunity to practice the dharma! All are welcome.

The Day of Mindfulness includes periods of sitting, walking and downloaded guided meditations and dharma talks by lay and monastic teachers. The retreat runs from 1-5:30 p.m.

There is an hour dinner break for those who'd like to stay for the evening sit. Each person is responsible for their own dinner. There is an on-site kitchen with a microwave, and numerous nearby options for food, including a New Seasons store several blocks away.

Trillium’s regular evening sit begins every Sunday at 6:30.
